Everything you can do in A.R.I.S.E. Reader, step by step

How to approve students, approve book quizzes and grade changes, grade reading responses, connect families, and run live quizzes, game time and prizes. Each section tells you exactly where to click.

1Sign in and find your tools

All of your class tools live in one place: the A.R.I.S.E. Reader page.

  1. Go to www.arisereader.com and sign in with your teacher username and password. New teachers sign up at Teacher signup; the administrator approves new teacher accounts before the tools open.
  2. You land in WorkHub. Open A.R.I.S.E. Reader, or go straight to www.arisereader.com/reader (bookmark it).
  3. Across the top you'll see the tabs: Overview, Live quiz, Scenes, Students, Advisory & Lit, Approvals, Parents, Quizzes & grading, Game time and Prizes. On a phone, swipe the tab row sideways to see them all.
TipThe moon/sun button at the top switches night mode. The back button at the top left returns you to your hub.

2Your Overview page

The first tab shows what needs your attention today.

Reader›Overview

The four counters

Students, To approve, To grade and Book requests. Tap any of them to jump straight to that list.

Needs you

Students waiting to join, responses to grade, grade change requests and book requests, each with a count.

Start something

Host a live quiz, Study Squad practice sets, the Leaderboard, Scenes, and your plan.

Proctor code

Your class's code for proctored quizzes, with a Copy button (see section 9).

Good habitCheck Overview once a day. If every counter reads 0, you're caught up.

3Approve students who join your class

When students make their own accounts, they choose their school, grade and you as their teacher. They can't start until you approve them.

Reader›Approvals›Joining
  1. Ask students to go to www.arisereader.com and sign up. On the sign-up form they pick their School, then their Grade, then choose your name under Teacher.
  2. Open the Approvals tab. A red number on Joining shows how many students are waiting.
  3. Check each name and username, then press Approve. The student moves into your class and can sign in and take quizzes right away.
Don't recognize a name?Leave that student waiting and check with your school before approving. Only approve students who are really in your class.

4Add students yourself (whole roster at once)

Skip the sign-up step entirely by adding your roster. Students you add don't need approving.

Reader›Students›Add students
  1. Open Students and press Add students.
  2. Download the template, or paste rows straight from a spreadsheet. Each row needs First name, Last name and Student number.
  3. Upload or paste, check the preview, and add them.
  4. Tell students: the username and starting password are both their student number. The first time they sign in they're asked to pick their own password.

5Approve a new book (AI quiz)

If a student's book isn't in the Library, they can make a quiz for it. That quiz stays hidden until a teacher approves it, so you control what's added.

What the student does

  1. In the Library, the student searches for the book. If it's not there, they press Create a Quiz (or Create AI Quiz), and type the Book Title and Author.
  2. A.R.I.S.E. writes the quiz and sends it to you for review. Teachers get a notification.

What you do

Reader›Approvals›AI quizzes
  1. Open Approvals and choose AI quizzes. Each row shows the book, the author and the student who made it.
  2. Press Approve to add the book and its quiz to the Library for everyone, or Send back if the title or author is wrong.
  3. After approval, the book shows up in the Library on its points shelf. Students can find it fastest by typing the title in the Library search.
Students still can't see an approved book?Ask them to refresh the page (or sign out and back in) and search the title. Books are also filtered by grade level, so a book that's well above or below a student's grade band may be hidden for that student. Contact the administrator if it still doesn't appear.

6Book requests

Students can also send a note asking for a book to be added. These are requests, not quizzes.

Reader›Approvals›Book requests
  1. Open Approvals and choose Book requests. You'll see the book title, who asked, the date and their message.
  2. To get the book added, have the student make the quiz with Create a Quiz (section 5) and approve it, or pass the request to the administrator.
  3. Press Dismiss once it's handled, to clear it from your list.
NoteDismiss only clears the request from your list. It does not add the book. Approving the quiz under AI quizzes is what adds it.

7Grade change requests

A student's grade level decides which books they see. When a student asks to change their grade, you approve or deny it.

Reader›Approvals›Grade changes
  1. Open Approvals and choose Grade changes. Each row reads like "Grade 7 → grade 8".
  2. Press Approve if it's correct; their Library updates to the new grade's books. Press Deny if not.

8Grade reading responses (extra points)

After each book quiz, students can write about the book for up to 10 extra points. You read and score those.

Reader›Quizzes & grading›To grade
  1. Open Quizzes & grading. The red number on To grade is how many responses are waiting.
  2. Read the student's written answers.
  3. Choose Extra points from 0 to 10 (or No extra points), add an optional Note to the student, and press Save grade. The points go onto the student's total.
  4. To fix one you already graded, switch the list to Graded, open it, press Change grade, then Save new grade.
How quiz points workThe multiple-choice book quiz is scored automatically. Each book is worth its points value (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and so on), and students earn it by passing. You only grade the written responses.

9Proctor code and camera quizzes

Quizzes are taken either with you watching (proctored) or alone with the camera on.

Reader›Quizzes & grading›Proctor & growth

Proctored quizzes

  1. Your Proctor code is on the Overview page and under Proctor & growth. Press Copy or read it out.
  2. Students type the code to start a proctored quiz. Share it only while you're watching them test.

Camera quizzes

Reader›Quizzes & grading›Camera quizzes
  1. When a student takes a quiz alone, the camera takes pictures, and A.R.I.S.E. flags anything unusual (for example, answering much too fast).
  2. Open Camera quizzes to review flagged quizzes: the Pictures, What happened, Answer pace and Earlier tries that weren't turned in.
  3. If the quiz wasn't fair, remove the points (with an optional reason for your records). If it was fine, give the points back. Only teachers and the site admin can change points.
Good to knowCamera pictures are deleted automatically after 30 days. Growth check on the same screen shows each student's score and reading speed (words a minute).

  4. Press Present. Students follow on their own screens, and their answers appear under Live responses. Press End live when done.

14Game time (Club A.R.I.S.E.)

Games reward reading. By default, passing a book quiz unlocks unlimited games for the rest of that week (Monday to Sunday). You can change that for anyone, and your locks always win.

Reader›Game time

For each student

  1. Under Each student you can see whether they can play now, are locked, or need another passed quiz.
  2. Press Lock to turn games off for a student, and Unlock to turn them back on.

  2. Choose Closes at, Opens again at and the days, then press Save closing hours. Times are Mountain Time; a closing time later than the opening time runs overnight.

The Game time card at the top also handles requests for more play time and bonus minutes.

Reader›Advisory & Lit
  1. Open the tab to see every student with their Advisory and Literature teacher.
  2. Turn on My students to see only the students who named you.
  3. Use Download or Print for a class list.

17The Library (what students see)

Books are grouped on shelves by points value: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and up. Students only see books for their grade band.

  • Search is the fastest way. Type the title. If it's not found, the student can make a quiz for it (section 5).
  • Books assigned for your class appear at the top for your students.
  • Accessible quiz mode and Eye Gaze quizzes are there for students who need them.
  • Students take the quiz when they finish a book. The question "Have you finished reading this book?" comes up before it starts.

?Quick answers

I approved a book but my students can't see it.

Make sure you approved it under Approvals › AI quizzes. Dismissing a book request doesn't add the book. Then have students refresh and search the exact title. If the book is outside their grade band, it may be hidden for them. Still missing? Contact the administrator with the title.

A student signed up but isn't in my class.

Look under Approvals › Joining and press Approve. If they aren't there, they may have picked another teacher. Ask the administrator to move them to your class.

A student forgot their password.

Students → find them → Password → set a new one and tell them.

A student's grade level is wrong.

Have them request the change, then approve it under Approvals › Grade changes.

A student got points for a quiz they didn't really take.

Open Quizzes & grading › Camera quizzes, review the pictures and pace, and remove the points.

Students are playing games instead of reading.

In Game time, lock that student, set a daily limit, or set class closing hours.

Everything is empty and there's a message about the Class plan.

Your Reader tools need the school's Class plan. Ask your administrator, or press Get the Class plan.

My teacher account says it's waiting for approval.

The administrator approves new teacher accounts. Your tools open as soon as that's done.
